Healthy Food Basket

A Healthy food basket for a single male

The Victorian Healthy Food Basket1 survey, developed in 2007, is a tool that assesses the affordability of a healthy diet. The basket provides both healthy food choices and foods that represent typical purchases of Victorians. The healthy food component of the basket provides enough food to meet the nutritional needs of four different family types for a fortnight.

These reference families include:

  • Typical Family (44 year old male & female, 18 year old female & 8 year old male)
  • Single Parent Family (44 year old female, 18 year old female & 8 year old male)
  • Elderly Pensioner (71 year old female)
  • Single Adult (adult male > 31 years)

The Victorian Healthy Food Basket is being used as a method to monitor the cost and affordability of food across Victoria as part of the new Victorian Community Prevention Model ( http://www.health.vic.gov.au/prevention/community_level.htm). The cost monitoring project, funded by the Centre for Excellence in Intervention and Prevention Science (CEIPS) (http://ceips.org.au/), will select a sample of food stores across Victoria to measure the cost of a the basket. Monitoring the cost of food is important as cost is a significant factor influencing food choice and purchasing.
